Gardening
I have been planting flower containers for years for my patio. Watching them grow and flourish truly delight me throughout the summer months. During the summer of 2020, we decided not to set up our above ground pool (we weren’t really using it anymore) and I created a flower/vegetable garden in its place, something I have wanted to do for years. OK, I suppose you could call it a COVID garden…I did have my college sons trapped at home to help us build it! I designed it in Illustrator (seriously!), calculated the needed lumber based on those drawings and the adventure began. What a thrill it has been that summer and since to plan, plant, nurture, and watch all sorts of new little “babies” grow—tomatoes, zucchini, green beans, peppers, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, broccoli, spaghetti squash, pumpkins, basil, mint, lavender, and my beloved smile-cracking sunflowers! My family and I have experimented with all sorts of things to make with the goodies, too—zucchini bread (our favorite), pickles, salads, sauce, mint lemonade and choc chip mint ice cream, fried eggplant and zucchini and another favorite, tomatoes, mozzarella and basil.
The daily visit and care to my garden has been a wonderful new source of learning, comfort and appreciation.
PS. We gave it a year round use, too, by adding a fire pit in the middle for those chilly autumn and winter months!
